Jeremy Opperman

Jeremy was born with Retinitis Pigmentosa, a deteriorating eye condition which results in total blindness.

After graduating from the University of Cape Town in 1987, Jeremy worked as a marketer of cutting-edge professional development products and training services.

Since starting his own HR marketing consultancy in 1999, Jeremy has increasingly focused on disability issues and is particularly passionate about the unhesitant and natural integration of people with disabilities into mainstream society.

Jeremy created the Meeting Disability suite of programmes and he has conducted hundreds of disability awareness workshops for both public and private sector organisations. In addition, Jeremy and his associates provided extensive access-auditing and consulting services to major stakeholders. He is a committed advocate of centralised disability service facilities within organisations. He believes in promoting a strong culture of disability confidence in all operational functions of a business, including corporate social investment, customer services, sales, marketing and physical and digital infrastructure.

In 2015, while contracting to the Western Cape Government, Jeremy established a unique Disability Desk service within the Province. The Desk provided a responsive and proactive facility for internal and external stakeholders and created greater executive awareness, support for staff and external non-profits, as well as improvements to access.

Jeremy speaks, writes and consults widely on such topics as:

  • Achieving disability confidence in organisations;
  • Making a business case for universal access;
  • Eating Elephants: A strategic approach to disability inclusion;
  • The benefits of a Disability Desk: a centralised approach.

Jeremy lives in Cape Town with his family and guide-dog, Ronnie.
